Buy Now Pay Later and Promo Codes: Fees and Rules

Buy now, pay later splits the checkout total into instalments, so a promo code you apply at checkout should lower every payment. No provider page we read says this outright; it is our inference from the fact that schedules and fee caps are based on the final order value. Fees vary a lot: PayPal and Tamara say they charge no late fees, while Klarna US, Afterpay and Clearpay publish capped late fees.

How promo codes fit with instalments

This section is our inference, not a quoted provider rule. Afterpay and Klarna base their payment schedules and late-fee caps on the purchase or order value at checkout (Afterpay, Klarna US). That suggests a code entered at the store's checkout comes off the order before the plan is created, so each instalment is smaller.

Two official points do touch on codes directly:

  • Tabby: you cannot earn Tabby cashback and use a coupon code on the same purchase (Tabby help). Tabby cashback comes from shopping at partner stores opened through the Tabby app, whether or not you pay with Tabby (Tabby cashback).
  • Tamara: its Saudi site says Tamara Smart partner deals apply automatically or through promo codes at the store's checkout (Tamara KSA).

Klarna US also says combined offers can affect cashback earned through its rewards (Klarna rewards).

United States: Klarna, Afterpay, PayPal

  • Klarna Pay in 4: four payments, every two weeks after the first. The first is due when the merchant confirms the order, usually the shipping date. 0% APR. A late fee of up to $7 once a payment is 10 days overdue, with total late fees capped at 25% of the purchase. Klarna says it uses credit checks that do not affect your score. A return does not reduce what you owe until the merchant sends Klarna a credit (terms, June 3, 2026).
  • Klarna Pay in 30: nothing upfront; the 30 days start when the order ships. No interest or fees if paid on time. You can pause payment while returning items (Klarna). Klarna's longer financing through WebBank runs 3 to 24 months at 0.00% to 35.99% APR, with a credit check (Pay over time).
  • Afterpay: a payment at purchase, then three or four more; Afterpay's example has payments every two weeks. No interest on the standard product, though a financed version from First Electronic Bank can carry up to 36% APR. A late fee only after 10 days overdue, up to $8, capped at 25% of the order value; no late fees in Rhode Island. A merchant refund reduces your balance, starting with your last payment for partial refunds (agreement).
  • PayPal Pay in 4: $10 to $2,000, first payment at purchase then three more every two weeks. No interest, late fees or sign-up fees. Not available in Missouri (PayPal US).

United Kingdom: Klarna, Clearpay, PayPal

  • Klarna UK: Klarna says BNPL became regulated at 00:00 on 15 July 2026, with new agreements for Pay in 3 and Pay in 30 days after that date. Klarna Financial Services UK Ltd is FCA-authorised (Klarna UK terms). We could not read Klarna's current UK late-fee terms, so we do not quote a figure.
  • Clearpay: four interest-free instalments; the terms do not state the frequency. Late fees of £6, plus another £6 if still unpaid 7 days later. For orders over £24 the total is capped at the lower of £24 or 25% of the price. The terms conflict on orders under £24: one section says no late fees, the footer says a £6 cap. Clearpay uses a soft credit check and says it is deemed authorised by the FCA under the temporary permission regime (Clearpay terms).
  • PayPal Pay in 3: £20 to £3,000 at 0% APR, first payment at checkout then two monthly payments. No late fees. Repayment history is shared with TransUnion (PayPal UK).

UAE and Saudi Arabia: Tabby and Tamara

  • Tabby: Pay in 4 with no interest or fees, according to Tabby; a service fee may apply to plans longer than four payments. Limits depend on your history, basket and store. Tabby says it is regulated by the UAE Central Bank (Tabby). Missed payments bring "collection charges", with no amount published, block new purchases and can hurt your credit score (missed payments). A partial refund reduces upcoming instalments; store credit leaves them unchanged (refunds).
  • Tamara: announced it was ending late fees from 16 December 2023 (Tamara). Its KSA terms say no interest and no late payment penalties; failed payments are retried every two days and late payments may be reported to credit bureaus (KSA terms). The UAE terms describe paying in up to four instalments with no late fees, and say Tamara Smart cashback can be taken back if the purchase is refunded (UAE terms). Tamara Smart is a paid membership with a free first month; the monthly fee appeared as 19 but the currency did not display clearly on the page.

What regulators require

  • UK: the FCA confirmed final BNPL rules on 11 February 2026, with protections from 15 July 2026: clear upfront information, proportionate affordability checks, support in financial difficulty and complaints to the Financial Ombudsman Service (FCA).
  • US: the CFPB's May 2024 interpretive rule treated BNPL lenders like card issuers for disputes and refunds (CFPB 2024). The CFPB withdrew it on 12 May 2025 (CFPB BNPL page).
  • Saudi Arabia: SAMA's BNPL rules, issued 17 December 2023, allow no consumer fees except delay penalties and debt-collection fees, bar stores from adding charges, cap plans at 12 instalments and total outstanding BNPL at SAR 10,000 per consumer, and require refund procedures in the contract (SAMA rulebook).

Questions people ask

Does a promo code reduce my instalments?

Very likely, if you apply it at the store checkout before choosing BNPL. This is our inference: providers base plans on the final order value, but none of the pages we read states it directly.

Can I use a coupon code and still get Tabby cashback?

No. Tabby says you cannot earn Tabby cashback and use a coupon code on the same purchase.

What happens to my plan if I return something?

It depends on the provider. Afterpay reduces your balance when the merchant refunds. Tabby reduces upcoming instalments for a partial refund. Klarna US says you keep paying until the merchant sends Klarna a credit.

Which BNPL providers charge no late fees?

PayPal Pay in 4 (US), PayPal Pay in 3 (UK) and Tamara say they charge no late fees. Klarna US, Afterpay and Clearpay publish capped late fees.
